How to Build a Syllvan's Swing, RSA Workshop
- This swing is made of PVC pipe, canvas, and rope. Here’s how we made it:
- 1. First we made 2 squares of 1” PVC pipe using 4 elbow connectors.
- 2. Then we glued most of the joints, leaving only the front
two joints unglued on one of the squares.
- 3. Then we screwed metal “eyes” into the 4 corners of each square
and connected them with rope.
- 4. Then we used rope to hang the whole thing from a beam.
- 5. Then we made a pattern for the sling seat using news-
paper, and cut it out.
- 6. Then we cut out the canvas, using the pattern, and sewed
the two side seams together. Then we sewed velcro
hook and loop across both the back and the front
“tongue” of the seat.
- 7. Then we slid the canvas seat over the side arms of the
bottom square (we had to untie the ropes first).
- 8. The back of the seat hangs over the back bar of the top
square and velcros to itself on the outside.
- 9. The front “tongue” of the seat loops over the front bar
of the bottom square (the one that can be
removed), and velcros to itself on the outside.
- 10. To put Syllvan into the swing, first undo the velcro
of the front “tongue” and take it off of the front
bar. Then remove the front bar of the bottom
square completely. Then put Syllvan into the
swing, put back the front bar, and loop and fasten
the front “tongue” of the seat. His weight will help
hold the bar in place.
- Then swing him gently and see if he likes it!
